Firstly, measuring physiological responses<\/strong> (respiration, photosynthesis, calcification) of ecosystems forming submerged<\/strong> and emerged forests<\/strong> and monitoring<\/strong> the\u00a0environment<\/span>\u00a0where they live.<\/span>\u00a0I<\/em><\/span>n situ<\/em> multi-parametric probes<\/strong>, sensors<\/strong> and\u00a0discrete measurements<\/strong> (on weekly or monthly base) are used to\u00a0acquire\u00a0temperature, oxygen, salinity, pressure, nutrients<\/span>, pH, pCO and seawater carbonate data. Such\u00a0information are\u00a0extremely important<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0to monitor variations of\u00a0biologica<\/span>\u00a0and environmental parameters<\/strong> through time and detect the effects of climate change. A direct c<\/span>itizens’\u00a0<\/span>engagement<\/span>\u00a0in ecosystem\u00a0knowledge and functions in Nature\u00a0improves<\/span>\u00a0the social\u00a0awareness<\/strong> of\u00a0benefits<\/strong> that humans gain from Nature<\/strong> and their relevance for the global economy<\/strong>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Santa Teresa Bay is a site-test for experimenting and validating\u00a0remoti<\/span>\u00a0operating intelligent sensors, designed and developed by CNR-ISMAR within national and international projects for non-invasive and\u00a0<\/span>non-destructive<\/span>\u00a0observation of marine environment. Such sensors <\/span>autonomously acquire,\u00a0interpret <\/strong>and<\/span> transmit data<\/strong> (e.g. images of marine life,\u00a0<\/span>bathymetric<\/span>\u00a0surveys,\u00a0intensity and direction of marine currents,..), thus\u00a0represent<\/span>\u00a0extremely important tools for\u00a0knowing and understanding marine ecosystems.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The smallest particles of plastic (micro and nano) can be a vector for\u00a0transport of\u00a0contaminants towards marine organisms, thus affecting entire ecosystems.\u00a0In 2020, an experiment focusing on plastic and bio-plastic\u00a0degradation has been started at LabMare coastal station (Ligurian District for Marine Technologies),\u00a0located in Santa Teresa Bay. With the aim of knowing the mechanisms and extent of degradation in marine\u00a0environment, some cages containing plastic and bio-plastic\u00a0materials have been placed on the\u00a0sea bottom (depth = 10m). Samples are\u00a0analyses<\/span>\u00a0at<\/span>\u00a0CNR-IPCF Laboratories, in Pisa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The ocean is a remote and hardly accessible environment, in both shallow and deep coastal areas, as well as in Polar regions. To\u00a0<\/span>deeply<\/span>\u00a0understand the ecosystem functioning and processes in marine\u00a0environment<\/span>, long term observations (e.g., daily, weekly,\u00a0<\/span>monthly, seasonal, multi-annual) obtained via high-tech monitoring systems\u00a0<\/span>are the tools for acquiring big amount of data (<\/span>BIG DATA<\/strong>). Since the big quantity of data gained, post-acquisition systems based on <\/span>Artificial Intelligence<\/strong> (AI) are needed to\u00a0<\/span>automatically<\/span>\u00a0extract\u00a0validated data from the operating\u00a0marine observation systems<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CNR-ISMAR and INGV collaborate with the Bay for studying the consequences of the presence of the plastic in marine environment<\/span>. In 2019, a study on the absorption of organic persistent pollutants (POPs) in marine\u00a0<\/span>environment<\/span>\u00a0has been carried out in three\u00a0sites of the Gulf of La Spezia, in\u00a0collaboration with Cooperativa dei Mitilicoltori Spezzini, Piscicoltura Portovenere SOC. AGR. A R.L. and Scafo-rimessa Majoli.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Plastic is a material\u00a0extremely resistant to degradation and, for such reason, an European Directive (2019\/904)\u00a0<\/span>forbids the production of disposable plastic items.\u00a0<\/span>Bio-plastic represents an alternative material to plastic but, if not correctly disposed, once\u00a0<\/span>released<\/span>\u00a0in marine\u00a0environment, it requires longer time for being degraded\u00a0<\/span>respect<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0the plastic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
