										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="font-weight: 400;">Launching from 28 to 31 August 2025 in Lerici (La Spezia) is ‘MIMESIS &#8211; Biodiversity and use of the world’, an innovative and transdisciplinary training course combining ecology, philosophy, positive psychology and art, designed for researchers, educators, communicators, trainers and students, up to a maximum of 20 participants.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Realised in the unique setting of the Scuola di Mare in the heart of the Bay of Lerici, the project alternates thematic workshops, sensorial explorations, boat tours, moments of dialogue, listening and conviviality, as well as role-playing and meditation sessions, between sky, earth and sea; an immersive experience in the sign of a regenerative approach to the man-nature relationship that values the respectful use of resources as an act of care and a renewed ethics of inhabiting the world oriented towards sustainability.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The project is conceived and organised within Smart Bay Santa Teresa, the first Italian cooperative platform aiming at building a Nature &#8211; human ecosystem model to contrast the effects of climate, promoted by ENEA in collaboration with Scuola di Mare Santa Teresa, CNR, INGV, the Municipality of Lerici and Cooperativa Mitilicoltori Associati.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">MIMESIS is part of the Biodiversity Gateway of the National Biodiversity Future Centre (NBFC) and realised in collaboration with the theatre company Dynamis, the LTER Network &#8211; a national network for long-term ecological research &#8211; and the European Institute of Positive Psychology (IEPP).</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Teaching staff includes terrestrial and marine ecologists, psychologists, philosophers, theatre teachers, role-playing experts and sea practitioners, a multidisciplinary team with proven experience from research institutions, training organisations and nationally accredited associations.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>From June to early August 2024, Smart Bay S. Teresa hosted the children and teens from WWF Travels campus, organized by <a href="https://www.verdeacqua.org">Verdeacqua</a> and Scuola di Mare, who spent 7 weeks to discovering the underwater wonders of the bay.</p>
<p>These young citizens contributed to the regeneration of S. Teresa Bay by actively taking part to <a href="https://smartbaysteresa.com/en/mussel-and-oyster-shells-for-regeneration/">The Oyster Project</a>, under the guidance of Sofia Lorenzini (a master&#8217;s student at the University of Milan Bicocca and ENEA) who introduced them to the importance of &#8216;regeneration&#8217; actions of a &#8216;stressed&#8217; marine environment such as the bay. Sofia, together with educators from Verdeacqua and Scuola di Mare, guided the children and teens in the creation of natural structures (pillows) made of hemp nets (provided by <a href="https://reeco.eco">Reeco</a>) filled with shells of the concave oyster (<em>Magallana gigas</em>), locally grown by the Cooperative of Associated Mussel Farmers. These pillows were then placed on the bottom of the bay by the young citizens during snorkeling activities, thus making three-dimensional substrates available for the colonization of benthic organisms (mollusks, worms, bryozoans, algae,..).</p>
<p>This &#8216;citizen&#8217;s science&#8217; project-  carried out by Smart Bay S. Teresa for three years- is relevant for three main reasons: 1) Implementing the ecosystem services provided by <a href="https://smartbaysteresa.com/en/ecosystem-services-of-santa-teresa-bay/">marine ecosystems for the bay</a> by favoring their regeneration; 2) Adopting &#8216;circular&#8217; solutions with the reuse of waste from shellfish farming and the textile industry, reducing disposal costs, CO2 emissions associated with disposal, and employing waste shells in their natural environment, the sea; 3) Making citizens and producers active actors of a major changing process, with Nature regeneration as key factor for sustainability in marine environment. Last but not least, The Oyster Project is part of a much broader regenerative pathway that will affects the entire Gulf and involving, in the long run, the knowledge, protection and <a href="https://smartbaysteresa.com/en/our-future-in-a-shell-restoring-the-native-oyster-population-to-regenerate-s-teresa-bay/">restoration of flat oyster &#8216;beds&#8217;</a> (<em>Ostrea edulis</em>), a native species present in the Gulf since the late 1800s but highly threaten by direct and indirect anthropogenic impacts.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Oysters, bivalve mollusks, perform key Services: they are filter feeders (filtering 140 l of water per day) contributing to keep the water clean; they build underwater structures, the &#8216;oyster beds&#8217; or &#8216;oyster reef&#8217; that are actually barriers helping to increase the substrate complexity. Such structures are especially important in harbor areas where they provide space for organisms to settle and hide and also representing real physical barriers that protect the coast from the sea. Oysters, similarly to Mytilus sp., are &#8216;carbon sinks&#8217; thus they are able to use the carbon in the water to build their shells.</p>
<p>Among the different species of oysters, <em>Ostrea edulis</em>, known as the flat oyster (Figure 1), is a native species of Europe originally building extensive beds along the continent coastline and playing a crucial role in the economies of coastal populations and in maintaining the richness of marine ecosystems. Nowadays, the species is highly endangered and at risk of extinction according to the <a href="https://www.ospar.org/convention">Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Northeast Atlantic</a> (OSPAR). Thus, actions aimed a its restoration and repopulation are becoming a priority.</p>

<p>The flat oyster in the Gulf of La Spezia has been reported from late 1800s, however, strong direct anthropogenic impacts, such as coastal urbanization, the development of military and commercial harbor, the subsequent pollution of water and seabed, together with indirect impacts, such as the loss of marine habitats, substrate depletion and modification, altered sedimentation rates, and climate change, have all severely threaten <em>O. edulis</em> local population. Nonetheless, <em>O. edulis</em> is still present in some areas of the Gulf of La Spezia, including harbor sites, where can be found growing on ropes, submerged metal objects (chains, anchors), piers and artificial structures. The changes of the seafloor (i.e., muddy bottoms) are such that the flat oyster is not able to settle and grow forming &#8216;oyster beds&#8217;, but the persistence of the species despite the impacts is a sign of the resilience of the local population.</p>
<p>Within the context of PNRR <a href="https://www.raiseliguria.it">RAISE</a> project (Ecosystem of Innovation for Liguria Region, National Program for Research and Resilience), an activity on the regeneration of port areas through circular approaches and nature-based solutions (NBS) has been designed by ENEA, together with the Cooperativa di Mitilicoltori Associati, <a href="https://www.fondazioneimc.eu">IMC Foundation</a> and the PhD program in <a href="https://www.unimib.it/graduate/marine-sciences">Marine Sciences and Management at the University of Milano Bicocca</a>. This activity will aim at regenerating St. Teresa Bay through ecosystem restoration, including <em>O. edulis</em> beds.</p>
<p>Launched during the Oyster Fest held May 10-12 in La Spezia, the activity will be carried out by two PhD and a master students (University of Milan Bicocca and the University of Bologna). At present, structures for catching the oyster larvae &#8211; consisting on &#8216;Chinese hats&#8217; (Figure 2A) and oyster shells positioned in nets made of natural fibers such as hemp (Figure 2B)(provided by <a href="https://it.reeco.eco">Reeco</a>) &#8211; are in preparation. They will be positioned in 3 sites within the Gulf and monitored over 12 months to check the settlement and the growth of oysters.</p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">In addition, growth and metabolic measurements (respiration and calcification) of individuals of <em>O. edulis</em> characterizing the resident population of the Gulf (Figure 3) will be performed in order to monitor their health status through time. The biological measurements will be coupled with environmental monitoring &#8211; through Smart Bay S. Teresa empowered observatory &#8211; that will include high resolution physico chemical data acquisition and transmission from seven stations and that will be fully deployed in the coming months (funding: PNRR-RI EMBRC-UP).</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em>Ellisolandia elongata</em> is a red alga (Rhodophyta) that, as all plants, terrestrial and marine, do photosynthesis, that is, produces oxygen by capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the sea. Being a coral alga, it is also able to deposit calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in its cell walls through calcification, giving its fronds a &#8216;coral&#8217; appearance (figure 1) that guarantees good resistance to wave motion and predators. The fronds of <em>E. elongata</em> form &#8216;bushes&#8217; and the species creates a &#8216;fringe&#8217; between the 0 and 5 m of depth; these architectures (bioconstructions), completely or partially submerged, contribute in promoting the biodiversity, creating an habitat for a wide range of species, including polychaetes, crustaceans, molluscs and echinoderms, and offering niches for different developmental stages.</p>

<p>The coralline algae is wide spread in S. Teresa bay, growing on the artificial reef, on the floating pontoon and on natural rocks. Being one of the dominant marine ecosystems of the tidal belt (0-50 cm), therefore in direct contact with the atmosphere, it provides important ecosystem services, including biodiversity promotion and climate regulation. But how much and how does this ecosystem contribute to the absorption and storage of CO2 helping us in the fight against climate change? Smart Bay S. Teresa, in collaboration with the Zoological Station of Naples (F. Ragazzola) and the University of Turin (M. Battuello) is carrying out a pilot study to quantify the metabolic responses (respiration, photosynthesis and calcification) of the ecosystem to <em>E. elongata</em> in environment (figure 2 A,B) to ultimately quantify the capacity of storage of CO2 from the fringe present in the bay.</p>

<p>The project, a bachelor thesis by Sara Scarpa (University of Turin), is currently in progress and will allow to obtain preliminary and innovative <em>in situ</em> data on the metabolism of the ecosystem, thanks to the use of CISME owned by ENEA. These preliminary data are necessary for the launch of the long-term monitoring of <em>E. elongata</em> ecosystem to climate change mitigation in S. Teresa Bay.</p>

The plastic contributes to GHGs global emissions throughout its entire life cycle, from the production to the treatment; as consequences of climate change, extreme events exacerbate plastic pollution by increasing plastic dispersal with serious effects on ocean, ecosystems and ultimately on humans. The ecological impact of microplastics on marine environment and, specifically on plankton and nekton communities, is one of the objectives of the <a href="https://research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu/research-area/environment/oceans-and-seas/eu-marine-strategy-framework-directive_en">Marine Strategy Framework Directive</a> (MSFD 2008/56/EC). Furthermore, plastic beachcombing (i.e. the collection of the plastic waste on the beach) is a method for reducing plastic incomes and testing its efficacy according to the <a href="https://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/headlines/economy/20151201STO05603/circular-economy-definition-importance-and-benefits?&amp;at_campaign=20234-Economy&amp;at_medium=Google_Ads&amp;at_platform=Search&amp;at_creation=RSA&amp;at_goal=TR_G&amp;at_audience=eu%20circular%20economy%20action%20plan&amp;at_topic=Circular_Economy&amp;at_location=IT&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwt52mBhB5EiwA05YKow5JAOYNdLQtticZo7yc1_VQOACBRg9Jo5eahEsE3uBsEmPYXv31gRoCy8YQAvD_BwE">Circular Economy Action Plan and the European Strategy for Plastics in a Circular Economy. </a><b>PLACALA </b>project (Plastic and Climate Change), funded by the Foundation “Compagnia San Paolo” through the call “Re:Actions: Protect the environment, Contribute to future wellbeing”, is promoted by <a href="http://www.associazioneperilmare.it">Associazione per il Mare</a> applying Citizens Science approaches to gain didactic, educational and research objectives. On board of the boat &#8216;Moby Dick&#8217;, the participants will: 1. Discover and learn the natural beauties and the anthropogenic threats on the Gulf of La Spezia; they will learn the techniques and tools for ocean monitoring and the available knowledge and data from Smart Bay S. Teresa research institutes; 2. Monitor the ocean health by actively collecting data ‘in the field’ and thus contributing to the knowledge gap of the interaction between marine organisms, microplastic pollution and other anthropogenic stressors. Data and samples collected seasonally will be successively analyzed by ENEA (Casaccia Research Centre (Rome)- Lab. of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) with aim to understand the presence and diffusion of micro and nano plastic within the Gulf of La Spezia. <b>PLACALA </b>will contribute to knowledge and dissemination of the natural peculiarities of the Gulf, where Nature and People coexist within a scenario of high naturalistic value (UNESCO heritage, Priority Protection Sites, Regional and Natural Parks) and highly anthropic areas (marinas for recreational boating, commercial and navy harbors). The ultimate goal of the project is to make youngers and adults aware that this dualistic aspect can persist as long as virtuous behaviors and actions will be developed. Such actions have to focus on knowledge and protection of the marine ecosystems of the Gulf of La Spezia, which represent the Past, with ancient sea-trades such as mussel farming, but also our Future (<a href="https://unfccc.int/topics/cooperative-activities-and-sdgs/action-on-climate-and-sdgs">UNFCCC 2030 Agenda, 14 SDG</a>).</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="font-weight: 400;">Observing, measuring and quantifying the change occurring in the ocean is one of the global challenge with the highest priority (<a href="https://en.unesco.org/sustainabledevelopmentgoals">UNESCO Agenda 2030</a>). The extension, diversity and depths characterizing the ocean and its ecosystems, most of them still unexplored, as well as the use expensive technological devices for ocean monitoring are limiting factors in ocean data acquisition. Thus, cooperation among research, high technology sectors and sustainable ocean users is a priority for implementing BIG data acquisition in the ocean.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;"><strong><em>Sailing&amp;Research4Seas</em></strong> is an example of common project linking sport- sailing- with research and technology with the overall aim to implement the acquisition of physics chemical data in the ocean across the world. Based on the collaboration between the sailor Giovanni Soldini and his Orca srl and Smart Bay S. Teresa, the high-tech <em>core</em> of the project is the multi-parametric monitoring system <a href="https://subctech.com/ocean-monitoring/systems/surface/oceanpack-race/"><em>OceanPack &#8211; RACE</em></a>, produced by <em>subCtech</em>. The system is installed on the trimaran <a href="http://www.maserati.soldini.it">Maserati Multi70</a>, lead by Giovanni Soldini, and it acquires physics chemical data such as temperature, salinity, oxygen and pCO<sub>2</sub> (sampling depth: 1 m) along the route. Acquired data are validated and analyzed by Smart Bay Santa Teresa research institutes performing the data quality check by using <em>in situ</em> high resolution instruments and Smart Bay S. Teresa <a href="https://smartbaysteresa.com/grafici-rilevamenti/">underwater monitoring network</a> and analytic measurements.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>S&amp;R4Seas </strong>ultimate objectives are data sharing within the scientific community and the dissemination of the status of the occurring ocean change to the general public. Ocean protection starts from its monitoring and only the cooperation among sectors will allow to acquire BIG data and thus identifying sustainable solutions for the ocean and our future.</p>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p>On Sunday morning we did a Clean Walk at Santa Teresa Bay.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>In a few hours we collected several kilos of waste on the beach and the rocks, mostly plastic, cigarette butts and glass. During our walk on the rocks we &#8216;disturbed&#8217; some people who were sunbathing who asked about the ongoing activity and the Smart Bay Santa Teresa Project. We explained that the success of the Project &#8211; having a natural, healthy and sustainable bay &#8211; is based on daily actions, involving the community as a whole, especially those citizens who live the bay an oasis of peace and of well-being. So, in few minutes, several sunbathers joined us in the cleaning, demonstrating their care to Nature and marine and terrestrial ecosystems of Santa Teresa bay.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>After spending few minutes to collect rubbish from the natural environments, we immediately realize how much has to be done and, above all, can be done for helping Nature. Our active behaviors are fundamental. We ware all responsible for our actions &#8211; never leaving our waste in the environment, sorting it and disposing of it at home or in collection and recycling areas &#8211; but also in correcting someone else actions by picking up waste from the ocean &#8211; such as plastic nets, polystyrene, glass,&#8230;- and from the ground, such as cigarette butts, cans&#8230;. It is no longer time to call for somone else responsibility. Even if we act for limiting pollution, &#8216;active&#8217; and virtuous behaviors (collection, sorting and disposal of waste) areneeded for reducing our carbon footprint, also determined by untreated waste that, persisting in different environments over time, will cause permanent damages on natural ecosystems.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>For providing you a concrete example, see below the expected time of degradation in the ocean of some waste types (e.g. plastic bottles, one use cutlery, cigarettes, glass, cans,…) if they would not have been collected during the Clean Walk last Sunday.</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p>Help us reduce the carbon footprint in Smart Bay Santa Teresa by participating in the Clean Walk project. The Clean Walk project is an initiative open to all users of the bay who want to contribute to achieving the goals of Smart Bay Santa Teresa: regeneration of ecosystems, both marine and terrestrial, and reduction of the carbon footprint. The clean walkers, under the guidance of Smart Bay researchers, will be the main actors in the project. Divided into small groups, the clean walkers will explore different areas of the bay, including small beaches, rocks and boulders, paths leading to the bay, and vegetated areas, carrying out a &#8216;scientific&#8217; collection of waste, again under the guidance of the researchers. Equipped with gloves, bags and containers, the volunteers will collect waste in defined areas (2m 2 ) in a limited time interval (15&#8242;), dividing the waste by type (e.g. glass, plastic, mix, reusable materials). At the end of the collection, the different categories of waste collected in the explored areas will be weighed to estimate which categories of waste were most abundant and, through a discussion, an attempt will be made to analyse the causes (what are the sources?), analysing possible future solutions, both from the point of view of research and monitoring programmes, and from the point of view of individual behaviour. At the end of the activity, data will be collected on a paper form that will be processed by the researchers and will be used to monitor the presence of litter in the bay over time.</p>
<p>We look forward to seeing you on Sunday 31 July from 9.00 to 11.00 a.m. in Santa Teresa Bay: together with Smart Bay researchers, come and explore the different areas of the bay, to carry out a &#8216;scientific&#8217; collection of waste, sorting and disposing of it, helping to spread sustainable behaviour, protecting natural resources and raising awareness about keeping the bay clean.</p>

		<title>Ostreopsis ovata bloom in Santa Teresa Bay</title>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p style="text-align: justify;"><em><strong>Who is Ostreopsis ovata? </strong>Ostreopsis ovata </em>is an indigenous microalgae (size: 1000 times less than a mm!) composed of a single cell (unicellular). Arrived in the Gulf of La Spezia <em>via</em> ballast waters, this micro-algae is very well adapted to increasing seawater temperatures. To grow and reproduce, it requires strong light intensity, elevated temperature, high nutrient concentrations (nitrogen and phosphate salts) and calm water. Algae blooms (i.e., high concentration of algae) generally occur in summer, in shallow water, normally in protected basins (small natural bays and marinas). <em><strong>Where do we find this algae?</strong></em> <em>O. ovata</em> normally grows on rocks, macroalgae, corals, forming a brownish cover.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><em><strong>What&#8217;s going on in the bay? </strong></em>From half June 2022, seawater data recorded through <a href="https://smartbaysteresa.com/en/green-star/">Green Star project</a> revealed, at 1 m of depth, temperatures reaching 24°C. In the same period, <em>Ostreopsis ovata </em>weekly samplings revealed a serious increase in algae concentrations in the bay. Thus, <strong>algae bloom is occurring one month in advance</strong>. Previous ENEA&#8217;s studies conducted in the Gulf of La Spezia report the start of <i>Ostreopsis ovata </i>growth in June, with a progressive increase in July until blooms normally occurring at temperature above 24°C. Such temperature has been recorded from half June 2022, thus allowing an anticipated bloom of this indigenous micro-algae.</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner">Scuola di Mare in collaboration with Verdeacqua (https://www.verdeacqua.org) and WWF Travel (https://www.wwftravel.it/campiestivi/) hosts summer campus “Young marine biologists&#8221;. About twenty children have the opportunity to learn how to ‘live the sea’ in a sustainable way, by sailing and doing snorkelling, in harmony with the surrounding nature.</p>
<p>Being part of Smart Bay community, the young marine biologists will contribute to reduce the carbon footprint on the bay by selective removal of the waste from the natural environment through weekly Clean Walk. In addition, the children have the opportunity to discuss the impact the plastic in causing to the ocean (degradability, species impacted by plastic&#8230;) in a playful way, around a game.</p>
<p>Finally, young marine biologists will take active part to a ‘restoration project’ by creating substrates based on re-using oysters shells from the local shell farming, normally treated as waste, thus contributing to regenerate the marine biodiversity of the bay. </div>
